A recent study by university researchers Laura Molina, Izaskun Orue, and Esther Calvete has analyzed gender differences in eating disorder symptoms in adolescents. The work found that girls have higher scores on early maladaptive schemas, which may partly explain their higher scores on eating disorder symptoms compared to boys. Girls scored higher in the domains of disengagement and rejection, impaired autonomy and decreased performance, and focus on others. The study highlights the importance of taking into account social influences around gender and has implications for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders in adolescence.
