A recent study carried out by Mireia Orgiles, Marina Serrano-Ortiz, Jose Pedro Espada and Alexandra Morales analyzed how the school closure due to COVID-19 affected Spanish children and adolescents upon returning to classrooms. The research found that stressful events such as social distancing (experienced by 87% of participants), contact with the virus and bullying were related to higher levels of anxiety in young people. It was found that those who reduced their social contact and were bullied showed more difficulties in their school adjustment. Anxiety acted as a key factor in this process. The study highlights the need to emotionally support young people during their return to school after the pandemic.
